Do I even have to say something? This level is just perfect
One of the best examples of song representation in this game. Each part of the level has both gameplay and visuals that fit perfectly with each segment of the song, and all of them are memorable and unique in their own way. Keeping things interesting for nearly 10 minutes is no easy task and i think this level does it perfectly, with a very fun first half and a second half that serves as a build up towards the climax of the level. Overall, this makes for one of the most unique experiences you can experience in this game, and i strongly encourage intermediate and advanced players to give it a try.
Out of every level I've had the pleasure of playing in this game, none come close to commatose.
Rply's unique presentation and gameplay help elevate this level beyond the rest - with intuitive gameplay that keeps you on your toes at every moment, and decoration that just keeps changing in unique ways with each passing part, this doesn't feel like an average XXL level; this feels like a journey. The usage of colour to portray the different movements and emotions throughout keeps the near-10 minute run time fresh and exciting at every moment, and the designs change just as consistently, while retaining a visual style that still feels deeply rooted in Geometry Dash.
The song does an amazing job of making runs deeper into commatose feel that much more special, Glass Beach's unique vocal and instrumental performance give this level a sort of otherworldly vibe, and the progression between the calmer, more sombre parts relative to the loud, cathartic parts is really something special.
Speaking from personal experience, beating commatose is one of the purest adrenaline rushes I have felt playing this game, I think I got more nervous when I reached the closing couple of minutes of commatose than I did with any of my extreme demon completions, which might either be because I haven't played an extreme demon longer than a minute and a half, or because the sheer emotional catharsis the ending of this level offers is second to none.
If you're a fan of XXL levels, please, please, PLEASE play this level. Its an experience unlike anything else.
Commatose is a level created by rply, a creator whos been rather underground before releasing this level, with their more popular levels being "Trick Room" and "moonflowers", both duos with ImMaxX1, and their part in a bunch of collabs. This level is what brought him into a more mainstream audience, since it gained huge notoriety for its quality and also the song, Glass Beach - Commatose.
Gameplay wise, this level is quite gimmicky. Great ideas that are executed perfectly. The best example I can think of is the cube and swing dual, where the swing has to follow a line to avoid a wall of spikes. This part is set to achieve a feeling that the swing is playing the calm, cute guitar solo thats playing during the part and its such an original and well made idea that functions perfectly for what its doing. Decoration wise I can also say this is nothing shorter than perfect. A spectacle with its colors and huge song representation. It flows super well and the intensity is always on point, which is very hard to make, and even more for a level thats about 9 minutes long.
Very impressive level for all the good ways you can imagine. Nothing shorter than a 10 on this thing.
I love when a level takes its time to build a real sense of progression. Commatose does this beautifully and does a great job representing its song, but unlike something like Well Rested, this is not something I would consider visually perfect. Pretty much every time the pixelisation filter is used the level takes a complete nosedive, and I gotta be honest, I dont think any of those parts look good. There are instances of poorly communicated hitboxes and strange design choices, but for every part I dislike, theres an absolute banger as well - the finale is extremely visually striking, and with the exception of the spiral part, the first 4 minutes are pretty much flawless. I have my issues with Commatose, but I cant deny its an ambitious level and without a doubt one of the most interesting releases of 2.2 thus far.
