While this level features some truly jawdropping moments and compositions, it's ultimately soured by a lack of focus. Cut a minute off of the runtime and maybe the creator would have had the chance to actually put literally Any gameplay in half of the parts here.
LOVE: the stunning line art, the final section with the tiled-floor effect (should be much longer!), beautiful "setpiece" like designs with the line-drawings
HATE: gameplay that feels like it's regressed to the early 2.0 tradition of super-slow moving obstacles, Some weird use of over-scaled deco objects for a "painterly" look - It's never worked for me
+as a more personal gripe this uses an Extremely similar transition to my space gauntlet level at one point - Definitely not alleging plagiarism, I think it's extremely likely to be unrelated but I'm allowed to deduct a point anyway haha
Incredible visuals to a beautiful song. Only really the cube sections had engaging gameplay.
Absolutely stunning visuals. It’s a shame that the gameplay almost entirely amounts to staying in the center of the screen with the ship, or flying through incredibly slow moving obstacles (and with a 10 second unskippable intro!). When did we decide that super slow mode was acceptable?
Also I legitimately cannot tell what kills me and what doesn’t, or if it will be a hazard or a block, or what. I’m begging you to please make things that are actual blocks and not amorphous blobs that I can’t make heads or tails of.
EDIT: Raised my rating to a 4 because the visuals really are that good.
the polishing is a little kitschy and i don't think the song works with the level but a lot of the art, which is clearly the focus here, is really really impressive and ties together the varying designs that would otherwise feel disjointed pretty well. wish it was a bit more subtle but that doesn't really detract from the level, it's clearly just aiming to accomplish something different. not my favorite sgc entry but absolutely one of the best
Very unique way to present visuals, but I don't think this resembles the space theming that the gauntlet contest required personally. Still, this entry has a lot of charm and thought put into it and thank goodness it doesn't try to be insanely flashy and doesn't overuse shaders/particles. Definitely more of an art piece than just a level.
