Would've been a phenomenal demake if the (admittedly fascinating) gimmick parts werent so out of sync and barren, feels like a massive mismatch between what was supposed to be a hard hitting climax. I'm also not a huge fan on some the concepts of the original level, staying so faithful to these ideas is, ironically enough, to the level's own detriment

I kind of wish this level was made out of spite rather than love for Aperture, but alas I may need to set my hater agenda aside because this is still pretty good. It still has the same pitfalls that the original level has, big example being the perspective change parts which are still ass to play, but this level succeeds more than Aperture because the 1.9 style better compliments the imaginative themes of the original, where you’re looking up and wondering all the cool things that are out there in the cosmos, trying to picture all the pretty sights in your head.

An excellent remake for an already exceptional level, "Aperture 1p9" creatively transposes "Aperture" back into 1.9, managing to replicate the magic and jaw-dropping effects of the original "Aperture" while still abiding by period-accurate restrictions. It's a transposition which I greatly appreciate for its faithfulness to the original. Trying to imitate a part as technically complex and visually impressive as the 3D part within "Aperture" seems almost inconceivable, especially to try and copy it in an older update, but "Aperture 1p9" miraculously pulls it off. Every single part has a striking resemblance to the original in spite of the imposed limitations. Some parts might not be as hypnotically stunning as the original without the help of shaders, camera movements or move triggers (such as the famous film reel part), but I have to respect "Aperture 1p9" for how far it does push boundaries.

Obviously, as a very faithful remake, it's not going to conceivably compare with the original (as any of its novelty has already been used up by the original "Aperture"), but it's an excellent showcase of how limitations really do breed creativity.

My level. Think of the rating less of an opinionated metric on how I view this against other levels, and more like just a general satisfaction of the process in making the project.

Very surprised to see just how much attention and praise this got. I made this as a one-week fun project for Chunlv1 and some of my other friends. It was never really meant to be anything beyond that, just a fun goofy thing for April Fools as well as my appreciation for 1.9 and 1.9 creators, specifically Funnygame, Dverry, and some 1.9 GDPS folks like Valeud. I loved the original Aperture and since effects are much harder to pull off for 1.9 than representational art (and also since I'm friends with the people who built Aperture), that level felt like the perfect thing to "demake".

With that said, yeah I feel like it kinda shows its "one-week for fun project" flaws with the gameplay and some sections that I think aren't that great deco-wise. I definitely say anybody can continue where I left off though! I think this was an awesome exercise in "limitations breed creativity" and also the joy of discovering things.

For a demake that abides by the original 3D line and object count restrictions of the era, Aperature 1p9 gets almost everything right, and typical of 1.9 levels, is easier to learn than the original.

The only sour part that sticks out is the heavy ship in the filmstrip section. I would’ve cheated and enabled Fix Gravity Bug, as it’s much more intuitive, and leaving it off still doesn’t make it accurate to 1.9, as ship physics changed in 2.0 (less wobbly) and 2.2 (240 TPS). The 3D part is also not super visually interesting, but I’m not sure it’s possible to do anything about that.

Normally I don't like levels that strictly try to recreate modern levels in an older version of the game without really taking into account the limitations of said update. Apeture 1.9 does visibly suffer from this issue, feeling a bit shallow due to it simply trying to copy every little aspect of Aperture's gameplay but makes up for it in how well it recreates the effects

I don't like direct remakes of levels in general, but this is pretty close to the limit of what can be done

(The gameplay has since been altered to be more engaging and I like how it plays now :) )
