Even though it’s not the hardest level ever, far from it, it’s still incredibly threatening with the colour palette and the tight corridors and slow speed and the timings obviously. Definitely has an eerie atmosphere to it. Super cool level and easily my favourite from Zobros
I'm not entirely won over by much of Zobros' 1.9 work, but I think "Acropolis" is pretty undeniable. Zobros was able to create a very claustrophobic atmosphere here, as if you've crossed into an area that was never meant to be traversed by anyone. It's hard to name a Geometry Dash level that feels quite as still as this - Zobros' choice to deemphasise colour changes throughout, alongside the unchanging speed and decoration style leads to the level feeling truly abandoned in a way that few other levels do. This isn't to say that nothing happens though, because the progression of "Acropolis" is easily the best thing about it. You can just feel the way this level syncs to the song throughout - the infamously difficult first cube part seemingly mimics the song's first few notes, translating them to a series of utterly punishing, miniscule-feeling clicks, almost like the rhythm game equivalent of tiptoeing. You can feel the entire level start to open up as the drums finally kick in, with the sparse and delicate nature of the first few parts being contrasted with these wide-reaching, repeated cube jumps that actually allow the player to breathe a little - you're forced to make greater sweeps with your ship and ball in the following parts too, and the entire level just seems to get bigger and bigger as it goes on. I think the best moment is probably the brief cube section before the final wave, where Zobros breaks the gameplay down into these extremely basic spike jumps during a break in the song. The amount of tension during this moment is difficult to put into words - it's virtually cinematic in scale, despite the simplistic gameplay, and it manages to feel like the apotheosis of the entire level. The wave that follows is probably the most well-known and accessible part of the level, but it might as well be a victory lap at this point. It's just some very solid wave gameplay that feels cool to pull off - and it sends the entire level off perfectly.
It's hard to know what else to say. A classic that's still remembered for good reason - its influence may only be whispered in the community nowadays, at least in comparison to its more successful predecessor "Nine Circles", but I still think it's Zobros' most lasting statement as a creator, and definitely his best level to date.
