I do hold some personal connection to this level (it was the first demon I ever beat), but that aside: this is one of the best levels of all time
Monolithic is the word, both for Death Moon's second-to-none grandeur and its legacy as the spiritual end of 1.9. We're coming up on its tenth birthday Happy tenth birthday!! and still it remains as gorgeous, captivating, and dramatic as ever. Such staunch visuals and seamlessly sequential gameplay will simply never go out of style.
Rate I would give: Feature (Mythic if it existed back then)
The only problems with this level are all caused by the restrictions of the 1.9 editor. It is unreal how far ahead of anything else this level was when it came out. 95/100
This is one of the best and most famous GD levels of all time. The gameplay does falter a little bit on occasion but that is largely due to the way the level progresses. The decoration is Phenomenal and the musicality and energy of it all truly make this level a treat to beat. Instant classic.
iconic in every aspect. some of the most accessible and enjoyable easy demon gameplay in the game with some of the best design philosophy ever
the most flukeable level ever
death moon is an incredible 1.9 level, and it easily my pick for funnygame’s first level. it’s easy and fun, and the visuals are INCREDIBLE for its time. this is up definitely up there with all my other favorite levels. awesome xl easy demon with a perfect ending. the fact that this has aged so well is beyond me. sadly, the biggest issue with death moon is easily the inverted slopes, which are lirerally everywhere, but come on. funny didnt know that would happen.. ntm on him
The greatest level in Geometry Dash, and I don't see this ever changing anytime soon. This level feels like the essence of this game distilled into a single level.
For one, it perfectly takes Geometry Dash's roots as a rage platformer and cranks the nerves and intensity up to 11, utilizing both its gameplay and visuals for perfect tension and release throughout the level. Not only does it call back to its platformer identity, but also its rhythm game identity by being the perfect visual synesthesia to the song it is using for the level- this is what this SHK's song would look like if it were a GD level, and no other work could properly do the song the justice it deserves. Lastly, it takes Geometry Dash's abstract artstyle and twists it into a new, demonic form- a novel style at the time- as well as being an excellent demonstration of both Funnygame's technical ability, and how far he was able to push this game while it still being recognizably Geometry Dash.
It's quite a shame FunnyGame fell off when 2.0 rolled around, however with how boundless and expansive this level is, it makes sense that the update that allowed the limits to be further pushed would result in what would be the second, less impressive half of FunnyGame's time as a creator. I certainly miss this sort of work from him, but I think that's what makes his 1.9 work so special- that defiance can be seen in each one of his levels, and seeing him tear down the walls of the editor and molding them into increasingly impressive forms.
Death Moon is a brilliant level that I keep finding myself coming back to long after I first completed it. Few levels from this era manage to represent their song this well, and this level gives off a vibe I’ve rarely seen before or since its release. The structuring is great, every section feels unique despite the limited color palette, and the effects are simple yet effective. The sync is also on point; when I was first learning the level, when I realized the dual cube was not memory but synced to the music, my mind was blown, as it seems like hardly anyone else recognizes this. I have to dock a gameplay point for the inverted slopes in the mini wave (though that’s not entirely his fault; there were no hitbox tools back then) and the awkward, somewhat unsynced clicks in the first ball, but this level still gets so much right. Death Moon will always hold a special place in my heart as a near-perfect send-off for 1.9.
best level in the game
classic. holds up shockingly well today. the wave part is iconic for good reason
