This takes everything great about High Life and throws it out the window. The decoration has been turned into boring, lifeless glow spam. Barely anything remotely resembles HL’s original design except colour choices and the first part. It legitimately feels like the creators spent more time on their anime girl logos and less time trying to make the level good. The gameplay, oh god the gameplay. I don’t think HL’s gameplay is perfect but there had to be a better way to remake it than insane demon-level flow. Despite being this so-called “flow” I think the excessive gamemode changes make it feel less satisfying to play through. There is thankfully one thing Magic Life does that High Life doesn’t and that would be using the full song. Even then, this doesn’t save ML from sucking big balls. They couldn’t have waited a while for 2.2’s release in order to do a 2.1>2.2 transition at the drop (like High Life’s 1.9>2.0 transition)?
“This is exactly how not to remake a level”
-Me, a guy who is currently doing the exact same fucking thing
You are truly setting yourself up for failure remaking probably one of (if not the) most beloved rated 9 star in this game's history, but you didn't need to make it THAT bad.
Not only is this level a massive disappointment and incredibly shameful compared to what it is remaking, but the level is also just bad by itself. A significant portion of parts feels lazy and frankly uninspired as if they were made to hit some sort of quota and didn't try to go any further. The level also goes for this "decorated layout" style which always felt like a cheap way to complain about the emptiness of decoration but there are even some parts that are decorated and are still bad (most notably the pink part that feels incredibly messy with the particles). Even if this level was made for fun, it doesn't make it not good and I'd even say some people involved in this project did not have any inspiration to create a high-life remake and just made a part anyway.
Really disappointing, doesn't even play satisfyingly as similar levels in this style usually do. What a shame.
The Demon of Babylon disguises himself with the cloak of the righteous.
Yeah, it was made for fun, but it's not good. Lots of designs are lazy, safe, and overdone, and the gameplay looks really stale. These happen to be qualities inverse to this level's decorative inspiration, going so far as to label it a remake rather than a spin-off. If the creators had 10/10 fun, that's fantastic. Unfortunately, that's not what this site judges; it just wasn't meant to be.
Completely bulldozes over the rough but fun and intuitive gameplay just to turn it into obnoxiously learny flow gameplay. The visuals don't really stay faithful to the originals; it just feels sterilized. The glow and pulses feels like a cover-up of how barren the structures actually are. I know the original level's structures aren't much more complex but those structures at least embraced their simplicity. Also I really don't like how the logos stick out so much like a sore thumb. This level isn't themed around the creators.
Redempt the deco with cherry team, and this level would be better than whatever this is
“Magic Life” by Astraa is a stunning homage to the iconic level High Life by Migueword, breathing new life into an already beloved classic. Clocking in at a generous 260 seconds, Magic Life doesn’t just remake the original—it improves upon it in nearly every aspect, delivering a refreshing yet nostalgic experience. Paired with the smooth, vibrant track “Magic Touch” by Romos, this level creates a journey that’s both visually captivating and rhythmically engaging.
Visually, Magic Life is a feast for the eyes. It embraces a bright, colorful aesthetic that perfectly matches the upbeat, feel-good vibe of the song. Astraa has taken the original High Life and enhanced it with sleek decoration, dynamic lighting, and clever visual effects that amplify the energy without overwhelming the player. The level transitions smoothly between sections, with each area offering its own unique atmosphere, but always maintaining that signature, uplifting flow that fans of High Life will immediately recognize.
The gameplay in Magic Life is where Astraa shines, perfectly balancing challenge with accessibility. While it retains much of the original layout from High Life, it refines the difficulty and flow, making each jump and transition feel smoother and more intuitive. The ship and wave sections are particularly satisfying, with tight controls and well-timed sync to the music. There’s a great sense of progression, where each new section builds on the previous one, but never feels too overwhelming. It’s a level that rewards precision and timing but never crosses into unfair territory, making it a joy to play through.
The choice of music—Magic Touch by Romos—couldn’t be more perfect for this level. The track has a laid-back, upbeat rhythm that flows seamlessly with the level’s structure. The soft, melodic beats build up progressively, perfectly aligning with the gameplay’s ebb and flow. Every section of the level is carefully synced to the music, making every jump feel purposeful and satisfying. The track gives the level a sense of freedom and lightness, and its upbeat tempo keeps you fully immersed in the experience.
What sets Magic Life apart from other remakes is its ability to evoke nostalgia while still feeling fresh and exciting. It honors the original High Life while adding enough new elements to make it feel like its own, unique adventure. Astraa’s creativity and attention to detail shine through, making this a must-play for fans of both the original and those who are new to the level.
10/10. A perfect remake with a magical, memorable journey.
