Really awesome in theory, extremely dumb in practice.
This level just doesn’t come together quite right. I won’t belabor my disdain for long intros, because even looking past that this level makes some baffling choices like having 5 minutes of empty level at the end, or having gameplay that feels completely out of step with the song and is also generally too fast for me to comprehend. I appreciate the atmosphere of the level, but it misses the mark.
Completely rewrote this review because I was antagonized into playing it fully. It changed my opinion radically for the worse. The level is beautiful, but the game is too buggy to support the slope gameplay. As a result, the entire level feels frustrating because I constantly lose midair control for not holding the correct direction.
I made it to 67% in practice and then I gave up and watched a video. The fact that this is a megacollab isn't inherently a bad thing, and I think there's maybe some sense in which it makes sense for a level that pays homage to the horror genre to have a wide variety of voices. However, the consequence is that the worst parts massively drag down the best ones. The construction zone part with all the tech slopes and stuff was by far my favorite both in terms of gameplay and visuals, and all I could think while playing it was "I wish this were its own separate level so I didn't also have to contend with the boring schlock around it".
Also, in one of the parts, the creator commits an unforgiveable level design sin: they make it so that doing any skips/doing the part in an unintended way causes an invisible trigger to just not give you the correct portal. It's especially egregious here because it isn't even immediately clear that you can't progress, the portal literally doesn't show up. It's bullshit and the hallmark of a lazy creator.
Not as bad as it could be. The main issue is the copy pasted parts.
Absolutely stunning visuals. It’s a shame that the gameplay almost entirely amounts to staying in the center of the screen with the ship, or flying through incredibly slow moving obstacles (and with a 10 second unskippable intro!). When did we decide that super slow mode was acceptable?
Also I legitimately cannot tell what kills me and what doesn’t, or if it will be a hazard or a block, or what. I’m begging you to please make things that are actual blocks and not amorphous blobs that I can’t make heads or tails of.
EDIT: Raised my rating to a 4 because the visuals really are that good.
