a few years ago I was scrolling through twitter and saw a tweet that expressed how woogi levels seem to eminate so much unfiltered joy and they also added that they really hope woogi is doing well these days

I'm not sure exactly who tweeted that, but I'm like 80% sure I know...

either way, this tweet, for some reason, has been stuck in my head ever since I first saw it and I don't really know why but it just kind of spoke to me because it does very well describe woogi's levels for me and just how joy can be expressed through art

I will start by saying that colorful overnight is an exceptionally fun level to play, it's no secret that many regard it as one of the most fun insane demons out there... it makes use of gimmicks that while at times may be finnicky (the cube dual near the end of the level in particular for me), they are also just so satisfying to pull off.

the level is riddled with these iconic gameplay segments, like the dual wave with the gravity portals or the afromentioned cube dual part. I seem to be talking a lot about duals, but I guess that's because dual gameplay is one thing woogi absolutely excels at and is so known for, he has made iconic dual parts left and right from windy landscape to retention... the duals are just so awesome to play and watch

in terms of the design landscape of the level, I find myself drawn to how beautifully colorful this level is... really, the name colorful overnight fits the level very well... not only that, but in terms of 1.9 levels, this level feels like it has aged so exceptionally well... I don't think many levels from this era do that to the extent that this level does... I could say that it's sort of a shame that this isn't as iconic with the general playerbase as windy landscape, but I love windy landscape so much too that I wouldn't change anything

colorful overnight, to me, feels very nostalgic... and it might be because it was made during an era of which a bunch of gd players are nostalgic over - the good old 1.9, but it might also be for more reasons than one

I think when most people hear the term "nostalgia", they often think that it solely happens because they saw or heard something when they were younger and presumably happier... but this doesn't mean that a piece of art can't have an inherently nostalgic quality... for example I think the songs on both of the Minecraft volumes by C418 present this kind of thing in a great manner. some might dismiss the music because they think people only like it because they are nostalgic over it... but the thing is the music itself IS nostalgic... a lot of it has a warm quality but there's a greater feeling of melancholic longing in these songs that is definetly felt by those who listen to the music... the music feels so overbearingly nostalgic because it was pretty much designed this way to begin with, using many chords and melodic elements that themselves give any person a warm but freezing feeling in their soul

colorful overnight uses a song by 7obu (or tobu), and i feel like this song and a lot more of his music also has this nostalgic quality that many people seem to feel as well... I'd imagine woogi might've felt that way too when deciding that this was going to be the song he was gonna be using for the level

there is a sentence that I read somewhere, it goes something like "life is better remembered than it is lived" and I think that it isn't really untrue, is it? In a way, we long for the past even if we weren't even feeling that good back then, maybe it was just because everything wasn't as bad as it was now, or maybe there were certain aspects that were better or simpler back then

but I digress - I don't like dwelling too much on nostalgia, I like living my life, I like vibing with the world when it wants to vibe with me, I want to be happy so I try doing the things that make me happy... reminiscing is at times a great way to pass time and feel those past memories but don't let that become the only thing that you do, because there are still so many of those memories to be made
