The gauntlet contests have always been a bit of a wash for me, creating a myriad of levels that oscillate between pretty good (Subdivision Zone), boring (Slasher), and deplorable (Bussin). But every once in a while, a team submits something that stops me in my tracks. PLANET X is truly a diamond in the rough, one of the most thrilling, disorienting, relentless, and captivating levels I think is in the game.
What's even more wonderful is that it scored so highly in the gauntlet! It's not often that you see such incredible work shoved in the faces of hundreds of thousands of players rather than into obscurity. This level is also a megacollab between a few timely titans of the GD creating sphere, which makes this level's quality even more miraculous.
Just like the coveted celestial body it's named after, PLANET X is a truly an anomaly!
I love crohn44's other levels, but this one always felt a little unfortunate to me. I think Glide is a really great level, and I was initially very excited to hear it would get a successor, but what we ended up getting feels pretty weak. The designs in this level range from fun to look at to uninteresting, which I find surprising considering how exciting and hypnotic Glide is. Moving Forward feels more like a soulless rendition than an homage, and that's not to mention the song, which I find a little hard to stomach.
I don't mean to prescribe meaning onto what is ostensibly a very meaningful project for crohn, but I personally wasn't a fan. :(
