Original midnight city was better
The last part was pretty janky gp wise upon release, but that's been fixed. But my god this level is beautiful, sometimes makes me want to cry
I appreciate a lot of the ideas in this level but I think it borrowed a bit too closely to its references, and the gameplay is not exactly the most pleasing. I also feel like there was a bit of a clash in ideas throughout this level, like an info-dump of assets that is held somewhat together by Desticy's rendering and color usage. I really want to see aspects of this level expanded in separate ways, because there's some really cool stuff here.
Damn, I feel like I should fall in love with this one more than I initially did. Being the grand return of design-creator legend Desticy, you can see how much time and effort was put into this just by one singular person, and still look so visually phenomenal. That with the amazing song choice and fitting vibe it gives makes this such a stunning viewing experience. Sadly I think something went a little lost in translation with the level’s playability.
The gameplay, while does unique aspects that compliment the visuals a lot, like the first drop part bursting through floating buildings and going around the giant clock in the last part, just felt kinda…off to play. Like the parts in the end felt like there’s something off with how it reacts to your inputs, and it doesn’t help for how slow the whole level felt. Both drop parts mentioned show that problem immensely. It did end up getting a tad more frustrating than it needed to be, but I also felt like I should at least have fun with how it plays rather than it looking really cool instead.
All in all, I do find this the weakest gameplay of any of the ten successful Space Gauntlet entries, which is a shame for how good the level still looks.
