why is everyone so hateful this levels awesome other than the camera abuse towards the end that gives me a seizure

My previous review was a stub more than an actual review, and this level's review page coming up in conversation on a server I'm in made me think more deeply about why exactly this level isn't funny - and after comparing it to more effective joke levels, I think I've figured out why I dislike this so much.

Disconnected Descent isn't as much as a joke level as it is a level with jokes haphazardly stapled onto it. It doesn't have an interesting/high concept or a storyline to follow like in a cw2003 level. It doesn't play with the level format in an interesting way like Bransilver's joke levels. In this level, things ostensibly intended to be jokes just occasionally happen with no rhyme or reason and don't feel like meaningful additions to the level - strip them away and you're left with a mediocre remake of Digital Descent that looks markedly worse than the original for the most part. Comedy isn't just a torrent of random, vaguely silly bullshit - at least not good comedy. Good comedy has a hook, it has comedic timing, it has concepts. There's certainly more that goes into it than just "hey, look, it's a red hell level now, isn't that funny?!" The closest thing this level has to a hook is that it's a remake, but making fun of remakes is a dead horse that's been thoroughly beaten since fucking Generic Wave came out in 2018. Find some new material.

i hosted this level on an alt to have fun with friends and shitpost and we accidently manifested the most effective rage bait level of all time--I don't like to praise myself like this but holy shit it is so so funny seeing people act like this level takes itself seriously. If you don't think its funny thats fine I don't care, but I had a good time and bonded with my friends and thats all i really GAF about--this level was conceptualized as a friend group bit and ended as a friend group bit.

Obviously I can't leave an unbiased review because i hosted this with my friends but Im not gonna act like im not very, very amused by people taking this as a serious project, like 1/4th of the level was decisions made on a whim because we were bored

This is just so... tiring.

Joke levels have been a common trope in the community for nearly as long as Geometry Dash has existed, and throughout all that time, so few manage to make one that actually justifies its existence. The worst type of joke levels are ones that seem like they'd be serious projects if they weren't carelessly plastered with memes. Alcatraz and BBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBB are also examples of this, and I can't stand this. The energy this gives off is not of a creator wanting to make a fun, lighthearted project. Rather, these types of levels exude insecurity more than anything else. If you don't feel your level is "good enough," it's an easy scapegoat to pretend that, actually, it's all just ironic. This can never result a successful joke level, because all of it neglects their central purpose. Y'know... being funny. If you're trying to make a serious level, hiding it behind a veil of ironic detachment accomplishes nothing except making players apathetic towards your level, and this level is a shining example of this blunder.

If you're going to make a joke level, take some notes from MindCap. Specifically, bb circles and space level. both of these levels have simple premises, but they stick the landing because they have a genuine joke to tell with a genuine punchline. It's really not that difficult. And if your intention is to make a serious level... make a serious level. By having so little conviction behind your level, you simply can't expect players to take it seriously. This could've been a perfectly serviceable Digital Descent remake if the creators just put the effort in to present it as such. Throwing all of that away for some meaningless joke will be the death of your level.

Why does this level exist?, like it wasn't a serious level right?, I'm sorry but it's such an unnecessary level that just takes digital and instead of fixing the few problems that brought it down from being really good it just makes it so much worse, the deco is so inconsistent without a main theme that it just feels awkward to look at and the gameplay is so uninteresting that I just don't feel a reason to play it over digital, and don't even get me started on that last part being a tiktok edit, the only reasons this doesn't get a 0 in any areas is because of the fact that there are definitely worse levels.
