Millennial Dash uses a simplistic modern style to create an atmosphere that matches a relatively relaxed song while experiementing with several aspects of the style, such as backgrounds and color schemes. I believe that when I played Millennial Dash, the first thing I noticed was the depth of the backgrounds. They were quite complex and worked well! At times there would be text to introduce parts or close out the level. Other backgrounds featured elements that would pulse in accordance to the song’s beats. There were a lot of little elements that also added a bit of charm to this level, let it be the wave trail at 36%, or the small details in all the block designs. The major thing I found to be a bit of a place to improve were the color schemes. In one part, it was dark green and something of a beige, attatched to a white. This scheme made the level feel very flat and basic, due to the fact that it was used a lot. Then it pivoted to a more neon-oriented idea, which felt slightly strange on a bright white background. Thinking about what emotions colors evoke in the player and what works well together could be a great way to add a bit more depth and finishing to this level. Also, at the beginning, lots of the movements felt very sudden, although this seemed to get improved near the end; going back and resolving the earlier stages’ jolting feeling might help it feel thoughtful and graceful. Millennial Dash is a unique attempt at the modern style that has interesting background concepts and a few elements that added some charm to it! However, there were a lot of questionable color choices and some of the movements felt underdeveloped. Overall, a solid start with the modern style; one that can be learned from and improved. I’ll keep an eye out for what BombCraft2010 does next.
