Before NONG became more heavily popularized, odd time signatures were a factor of GD level making that was not very common to see. The vast majority of songs on Newgrounds are in time signatures that lend themselves to streamlined creating (4/4, 3/4, 6/8, 12/8). However, once in a while, we’ll see a work that uses a song that’s in something a bit less common, such as 5/4. It’s even rarer to see the usage of mixed meter, or switching between multiple time signatures in a single song.
This level is one such example of this, using a remix of Marx’s theme from Kirby Super Star. It’s really interesting to see how a song like this was tackled in a level, a collab no less, and it shows how much the medium has progressed as creators have gotten more experience with the concept. I cannot say that WhirL and co passed with flying colors here, as the mixed meter actually works against the cohesion and makes transitions between creators feel uneven and disjointed. There’s also other problems here (the pixel art, the colors, the gameplay, etc.) but I think this is a level that more experienced creators should look at and see through that time signature lens- you might learn a thing or two!
