Cosmomango basically summarised my entired thoughts on this level. As a remake of FunnyGame’s level, this is shit. As its own level TDM is actually good.
Really good when you disconnect it from what it’s trying to remake
This level is... interesting. This is a rare case where the poor execution of a level makes it better. If this level was fully polished, the result would just be a worse and incoherent version of death moon. Now, this is still a worse and incoherent version of death moon, but it's more than that. This level is so messy that it's nearly impossible to tell what is the idea behind it, it almost feels like it's mocking death moon. The name of the level being THE death moon might imply that this is the real death moon and that the original isn't. I think that the creator genuinely believed that this is better than the originial, which is something I obviously don't agree with, but I respect it.
It lets Death Moon down pretty bad. Feels a lot more messy, with things such as the bossfight or having parts with color schemes that don’t include red, along with the lack of some things that made Death Moon the experience that it was (Such as adding gameplay to parts that would’ve been auto). Standing alone, it’s fine, but as a remake of Death Moon, it falls flat horribly…I’m not sure if any remake of Death Moon could work well, anyway.
(Completed in 7/28/25)
I'm very torn on what to think of this. Death Moon has never been a favorite of mine but I still think it's perfect for what it is and really doesn't need a modernized take. This might as well be one of the better ones from what I've seen as it does look more distinct from the original and looks decently made, but it really doesn't carry the great progression and atmosphere the original had, and some parts just look pretty out of place like the heavenly-like deco between 36-53%.
Even the gameplay feels noticeably watered-down. Not that Death Moon had great gameplay from the start, but it did do the level justice by rightfully complementing the design and song representation, like the build-up mini cube parts before both drops of the level. Replacing those parts with mediocre spider gameplay really makes it feel less impactful than it did in the original (also really dislike the choice with the the 31% red orb just saying). It ultimately makes the level feel more boring to play with how way easier it was, having a random "bossfight" section in the climax, and even having some questionable hitboxes and spike placements with a few parts.
I guess I'll say the creators didn't do a bad effort with making a remake of Death Moon, but whatever it takes, it's not going to top the original and how much impact that one had.
Total Attempts: 66
The gameplay is really fun but it just saps all the vibes that Death Moon created. There's a lot of thoughtless use of religious symbolism without much cohesion and that kills a lot of the atmosphere that was executed to perfection by the original.
good attempt at modernizing this classic. Doesn’t react the original in quality for sure, but nice regardless
