This level is nothing short of hypnotizing. When I first watched a video on it, I didn't even realize how long it was until the hallway point. If anything, that really shows how consistent this level is able to amaze the viewer.
This level was a level I used to play a lot back when it was first released for fun, and I genuinely loved playing it. This levels gameplay is extremely fun, and the way the gameplay works with the deco to match the theme is well executed and fascinating to watch. I do wish there was a little more variation or more going on at times though, but other than that, I love this level.
a culmination of everything that makes devin's semi-signature core style so great in a giant package
When I think of 2003devin, this level immediately comes to mind.
alika is an incredibly simple but well-crafted journey through a style of gameplay that was barely seen from 2.0's release up until then. The usage of move and rotate triggers complements the overall mechanical theme of this level, creating the bizarre machinery that grounds the uniqueness of the gameplay's style.
The visuals personally reminded me of a hypothetical industry's mechanical exoskeleton, something that represents devin's level series pretty well. alika is, effectively, a compilation of his previous levels! Unique elements like the "sawblade scythes", the moving boxes and other moving objects can be found in Downside City, Downside Factory, Downside Industries and Inside City - making alika a great summary of the series to enjoy.
I personally think devin's later levels are better compared to alika, but I do find this level to be memorable and "fundamental" to know as a 2003devin fan, since it marks the roots of devin's deserved rise in popularity.
A simple yet quite a nice map to play through. The gameplay is very unique and is satisfying to play through, except for the last ship part since it's so stressful. The difficulty of the map is more like medium-hard demon throughout it, but it's rated insane demon because of the length of it, which is almost 5 minutes. The visuals are simple, but they are quite idiosyncratic since they use different kinds of interesting structures that look cool. Overall, it's a very nice level, and I'd say this could be good for a first insane demon if you are used to endurance.
