Here's a neat April Fools level! I think it speaks a lot to how good of a visionary MindCap is as a host that this level still gets discussed to this day. Not only that, it was able to do something which no other level in GD had been able to do before- scare someone. I think for that, Collab Level definitely succeeds as a visual experience, but I don't really think it works too well as a GD level. The repetition of attempts leads to the jumpscares becoming less startling, and the jumpscares themselves rely on being sudden, which leads to them becoming quite predictable. Combined with the fact that many of the horror setpieces feel a bit derivative of other horror works (that im scared game comes to mind), it leads to a horror experience that feels quite blunted. I also think the rating system kind of ruined the experience of Collab Level, because knowing it’s a demon level, you're likely going to go into practice mode first to go through the level, where you'll initially find the jumpscares. Even worse if you were playing in 2.1 without mods (although I think it might be funny as fuck to have Stay Inside Me playing while going through some of the scares).
I think horror can work in a GD level, yet I don't think there has been any level that has been able to succeed as a horror expereince in GD. However, I think that there are a few moments from Collab Level and a few other levels that I think can creators can learn from if they want to take up the challenge. I know not everyone probably had this feeling, but from her eyes flow 's ending was a pretty good example here, where I felt a bit worried that something was going to abruptly happen, and I think it's that part of the horror, that nagging feeling that something is about to happen, yet it won't, that is the best approach here. Another thing is making sure that the player encounters these experiences by surprise, something that I think 2.2's new mechanics may lend themselves well to. I hope this is explored more; I usually do not sit well with horror (I am a big scaredy cat) but I will always be open to seeing how creators improve upon this formula.
