Something I've noticed is that a lot of GD players, especially on this very website just seem miserable as hell in their reviews of levels, like they don't really enjoy the game in the first place, idk if it's just me but it's an ever-growing trend I've noticed since 2.2 dropped, like if y'all don't like it then just quit and find another enjoyable art medium based game

Thoughts? I don't mean ill intent with this btw, I just feel like something really needs to be said regarding this

not all levels have to be good for a person to enjoy the game. it's just that the levels appreciated by the wider community can be unappealing to someone, which creates the impression that they hate the medium as a whole - they don't, they value their own little treasures

it's the same thing as with movies, really. it's pretty wild to me how the apparent majority of the community thinks that most (at least, rated) levels are good when this is clearly not the case with like any other art medium

"find another enjoyable art medium based game"

treating gd as a "art medium based game" could be the problem. calling gd "art medium based" implies that all levels are forms of self expression that are meant to be consumed and critiqued. gd COULD be used for such a purpose, but it's not always that serious and not every creator has that goal. taking a video game too seriously often inhibits personal enjoyment, so sometimes people gotta recognize that they are playing a video game and just call the level they don't like "bad" rather than conjuring up a lengthy ostentatious paragraph about how the level is "soulless" or "slop".

people who like rate stuff in general sometimes tend to come off as negative because its natural to talk about the negatives in any sort of review even in stuff you like

"it's an ever-growing trend I've noticed since 2.2 dropped"

I think this is the key to what's going on. The update changed the game so much that people resent it and everything that's come since. I remember "GD is dying" was also a popular sentiment in 2.0. If you were there, you'd probably think Adiale was a terrorist the way people talked about them and their levels.

If you love something you hold it to a higher standard.

It's because we know levels can be good since there are countless examples in the past.
