I just read a tweet complaining about the negativity of some of the reviews in this site, and many people associate that to the fact that its audience came mostly from gdtwt.
So I'm wondering, what do you think would happen if the userbase for the site got much bigger? Do you think reviews would become more positive on average? Do you think they would be more hateful? Would nothing change?
we would die and also stop living i think
I decided to make an account after that tweet. I will say that a fair few of the reviews here aren't that great. Also a lot of levels have no rating because there are so few reviews.
Depends on where this new audience comes from. I don't like many of the reviews here but if fucking YT shorts audience comes along this site is gonna get worse with it's toxic positivity
Even if I highly disagree with some takes here, it is admittedly nice to see a fresh perspective on many levels. I don't use twitter so there's not really a cumulative space for what I would call the "GD Alternative creating scene".
Idk I just joined an hour ago to give my opinions cuz I realized this site needed more people than just RYM rats that think every level sucks if it isn't some ultra niche gem
The goal of any fandom should be to keep itself as small as possible
I fear a more popular Hyperbolus would have reviews devolve into hotheaded remarks about levels — similar to in-game comments — especially if an integration mod was published to the Geode index. The more weight this place holds on the community, the more incentive there is to use reviews as a “super dislike” or get people to review bomb. Those people wouldn’t have to justify anything since reviews can be left blank, and as long as they’re not as obvious as the troll accounts that have popped up, it seems like they would get away with it. It would be cool to see more levels get reviewed, and I assume scores would better represent the wider GD community. Still, I can’t imagine the average quality of reviews, especially written reviews, taking anything but a nosedive in the future, which makes me sad. The people who craft great reviews here are why I keep coming back, and shaped me to view and critique levels in a more constructive light. There’s not much else like Hyperbolus in the community, and I’d hate to see it watered down.
depends on where the new audience comes. if it's the same pretentious circlejerk, things are likely to remain the same or worse; if it comes from the more mainstream community, there would be less hatred towards some levels and standards would be lower but less harsh as well. the site's userbase in its current status is quite negative and pretentious. a larger audience would result in more positive reviews and scores, and it would also represent the whole community better, in this scenario, you could be able to see what the majority of the gd community thinks, top levels would be levels appreciated and recognized by the whole community, but as a side effect, some niche levels appreciated by the current users might go down in placements, review scores and number of reviews.
I don't think much will change. There may be a slight change to the more positive or negative side, but I don't think it'll be enough to be detrimental at all. I know you're talking about AudieoVisual's tweet when bringing up this topic, but I don't think that this site is any more or less demoralizing than twitter is when it comes to looking at level criticism- all that changes is that this site is exclusively focused around discussion around GD levels, so you'll be exposed to more of it whether it is positivity or negativity.
I will also say this- the capacity to hate is not bound to a specific gaggle of people either on this site or on twitter. I took some time to scrub through both the replies of Audieo's tweet and other related threads, cross referencing users with Hyperbolus reviews and previous tweets, and whether a user expressed negativity or positivity towards this topic, the vast majority of them have demonstrated the capacity for destructive criticism towards another level or creator on more than one occasion. I don't have a problem with destructive criticism, but I find it disingenuous for people to claim that they don't like negativity when it comes to level discussion yet have been often negative themselves.
