HidekiX presents Deadly Premonition
rayoriens is just one of the most interesting old school creators to me and maybe thats because were both vietnamese but also because its hard to overstate his uniqueness as a creator. pretty much entirely underappreciated in his time and still is today (even when he has seemingly developed a small cult following overseas) but rayoriens is one of the only creators i know who always finds a way to put his own distinct touch on an idea even if it wasnt original. like how his spin on classic nine circles with a very cavernous feel that i dont think was replicated since, or that he made the first ever documented bossfight level
, and maybe sometimes that turns out to be a pitiful wiff instead of a colossal homerun but rayoriens is uncompromising and thats what i love most about his levels. its sometimes even frustrating to look at but when he swings, he swings hard
masterclass in hype and aura moments
twitter kids dont like any 1.9 that isnt death moon and rotd (didnt even get any real attention in the day but gets alot of attention now because of revisionist circlejerking) and as a result classics like this are left to rot. pitiful
Nacho21 was simply the greatest to ever do it. Everything this man touched became gold and it saddens me there is only one other review as of me typing this.
Its very simple but it works, and definitely would've been worse if there were more details. Not doing any more details than it has to, allowed the level to be much more easily digestible, thus much more absorbing. Less is often more if atmosphere is your game. Immaculate pacing as well. Everything flows together perfectly, its so much more than just the sum of its parts. In my opinion the greatest atmospheric piece by the greatest creator.
for being a gd level, STARPUNK feels indescribably huge in its sense of scale and awe. incredibly breathtaking in its maximal attention-to-detail. the logical conclusion of design
ive always disagreed with the popular assertion that krmal is one of the greatest creators in the game. the likes of lit fuse and falling up, while intermittedly very compelling, usually undercooked. black blizzard almost convinced me otherwise for a while that it is true though. krmal's preexisting penchant for atmospherics was fully realized here, and that is on top of it having some of the best gameplay he would ever make - every other second is a brand new idea on both fronts. an uncompromising monster of a level.
it is understated just how cool the gameplay is in this. some of the best player movement dynamics ive ever seen in an extreme demon and the trigger work is so tastefully done, makes all the early-2.1 decoration jank feels fluid and purposeful. a standout in the realm of Really Janky 2.0-2.1 Transitional Levels, just always a joy to watch (and sometimes play)
