my playthrough of flappy weird:

(first practice run) hey this plays kinda interestingly why do people hate it so much?

going from zero: random inconsistency in the beginning (especially at the part where the structures are pitch black against the dark purple background it’s super hard to see), very boring to play up to the chokepoints at the high speed parts, 98% x2

ohhhh

But despite everything we’ve been through, the hardship only makes our love stronger. I love you Flappy Weird.

was initially interesting and fun at first practice run, and i can still see the essence of that with sections like the semi-auto after the mini cube and that ending input with the flashing background into the last orb. unfortunately the incredibly rough chokepoint which is the infamous ball in this level completely sucked out nearly all of my enjoyment. it felt buggy, inconsistent, and generally super unfun to blitz my way through the earlier cubes and then die to some random input in this ball part. some random unbalanced part in a level is par for the course for the map packs though, so of course the ending cube to this level has to be equally inconsistent and annoying to really elevate this level above the rest. didn’t like it much at all but at least it’s over. still love the map packs

a level I just don’t have any complaints about at all really. has gameplay that’s aged like wine, with fun tight ship sections and simple memory for the most of the rest of the level’s duration. makes good use of its inspiration of xstep with well incorporated fakes. fun to learn and fun to play from 0 to a point where I fluked this from like 70. just a really good time in general honestly! it even nails the end wall for a satisfying conclusion. i wish we had more of these levels, or that they were easier to find..

i went into this level knowing nothing about it except for its poor reception on this website and i just have to say this level is absolutely hilarious. the space car caught me so off guard, and that in combination with the ai-looking backgrounds and ending cutscenes along with the creator having turned out to have quit because of its rating is absolute cinema

even if it’s super funny I don’t think there’s anything really of substance here. in the second half in particular the here’s barely any gameplay to speak of, presumably so you can spend more time looking at the weird ai art this level uses, which im not sure why you’d want to if you’re not the kind of person who binges gd showcase content or under age 13. the first half is much better decorated but it’s still very uninteresting. and of course, looking back on it now, it’s poetically perfect that such a messy level would be a space gauntlet entry.

cinematic masterpiece

definitely one of split's strongest. at her best, she can do a lot with very little, and maili hi is a 5 minute level that manages to stay interesting and engaging the whole way through despite the simplicity of the gameplay and her typical deco style. come and rest for a while, the sun's out, the weather's warm, and there's always room for another.

interesting little platformer first rate here. the concept is a bit interesting, though it has been done before with levels like "Everything kills you" by thearmyants, but i do think it separates itself a bit through just how silly it is.. each room is filled with silly demotivational posters, and the level's second half features a bunch of silly original gameplay concepts such as death to greed (picking up three dollars on the ground), death to boredom (spending too long looking at fine art), or going on a date with a spike and having 9 children. YIPPEE!!!! on top of that, the level changes visual style often and manages to look pretty neat for a first rate most of the time. neat stuff

so that all sounds pretty good and all, but unfortunately the level's execution ended up bringing it down quite a bit for me.. mainly just how unbalanced this level was. some sections were noticeably more unfun and tedious than others. in the first half, the size portal room and the teleport portal rooms were much more difficult than the other three rooms there were. i feel for a 9 star the size portal room was a bit overly reliant on annoying coyote jumps, and the teleport portal room really just was TEDIOUS thanks to a low ceiling and really small platform making a jump really really unintentionally difficult. and that part's only at the start of the room, so then you have to go through the rest of it and not screw up or risk going back to square one through more low ceilings and uncertain jumps. in comparison, the room where blocks constantly shifted in size was extremely straightforward. the second half was a bit more well balanced, though still suffered a bit during the aforementioned greed level being harder than all the other rooms by a long shot.

in addition to the balancing, the level only has one song playing for almost its entirety as you platform, being a sort of hazy, lo-fi ish synthwave song. i probably wouldnt have minded it as much if the rooms werent so unbalanced and i was stuck listening to it for about 38 minutes, where i got really sick of it really quickly. the only time it really changes up during playtime is in the brief spike dating section. so thats not very fun.

the creator's thankfully said in the comments that he's looking for balancing issues in the level, so i hope that some of these are ironed out in the future and the level becomes a lot more fun, but until then i cant really give this level the highest praise in the world, despite its charm. the creator is certainly very promising in the gameplay variety department though, so i hope to see more creative levels like this in the future :3

charmingly pretty for its time and surprised me when i saw that it actually played pretty well? when people write off the map packs as a whole because of a few bad apples this is the sort of thing that they end up missing out on as a result: well made, fun, fair levels that really make up the essence of gd and why i got into it

silly fun plat easy demon! charmingly unpolished with its deco in a way, especially during the ending bit where the games go to hell and the guards just start killing each other. gameplay is fun if a bit unbalanced (10 seconds of straightfly) and some parts of the ending are a bit unclear with where to go to progress (particularly when one of them has a sniper rifle and is trying to shoot you, some awkward gp) onwards but this level overall is well made and a nice time.
