Yeah well. The update ruined this one. I used to hold this one in high regard for its really well executed theme and block designs, but especially because of the very cool unstable speed gimmick! It fit the song well and though many would argue it's annoying to play I think that adds more charm and intensity to the level.
After like, 7 years? Radiation updated the level to make the speed portals visible. I guess it's understandable considering he probably got 50 weekly death threats for years from kids who couldn't get past it. But it removed one of the things that made it so unique and just kinda died for that.
Still a good level but damn
Since I just reviewed Abducted and compared it pretty heavily to this I guess I'll come here now. Yeah... I never liked this one and I never will. It's too overstimulating for my liking. Too much going on. Too many silly references and cutscenes that don't make any sense together and are just there to look like a TikTok edit. This is never what I look for in a level playing experience.
At least the gameplay is decent for a 2 star though. It knows when to be explicitly auto and when to just have a few jumps here and there. But it's never gonna be salvageable for me. I know some of my friends like it for being cute and silly but it's not for me. It just feels like the kind of level Viprin & co want to advertise Geometry Dash as, and it's already lost its essence at this point.
The NCS contest had BUSSIN, the event levels had boogie, and the space gauntlet contest has... This. I can't say it's bad, the visuals are fantastic and the whole idea of being inside a comic is pretty creative for a contest like this. My problem with this level lies in some VERY unnecessary creative decisions and the gameplay. Especially the gameplay holy crow.
It's way too forgiving, basically auto at some parts. If NCS levels had an issue of visuals and effects ruining gameplay because you couldn't tell what you're doing, this does the polar opposite and still in a bad way. You literally don't have to do anything because the level is gonna do it for you. You can skip the whole rhythm part. You don't have to click anywhere in the drop because a bunch of slopes are still gonna help you. If you're gonna make an easy level make actual easy gameplay, not one that would fit more in an 8 star but has patches everywhere so you cannot die. The worst part about this is that you eventually thick the player into thinking that you're not able to die, only to find out that the rocket part is actually not auto and you're supposed to control it like a ship. Took me a few attempts after getting to the ending to realize that. Horrible gameplay design.
Besides that, it's not that bad. As I said I do like the visuals and ideas a lot, the alien arts are great, although it really just lost the plot at the end. The random wojak art and the nyan cat made me stop taking this one seriously the same way boogie did.
Anyway congrats to Vegtam for winning the contest in advance! Clearly this is the kind of hyperstimulating level that Robtop and Viprin are looking for in contests like this.
Edit: I have since found out that the minigame involves a coin and that's why that part is auto. That's pretty cool. Also the new song doesn't make me cringe as much so with all of that this gets bumped up a point!
