One of quazery’s best. I wish the drop was more out there because i feel that it doesn’t fully embrace the sentiment of abandoning the “familiar” visually- it just needs a tad more abrasiveness to sell that. Still a banger anyways- color work is on point and the gameplay is perfect. It feels a bit like the inverse of Lit Fuse, where instead of progressing from numbness -> clarity it progresses from clarity -> numbness. Rock on freaky bro
The abstract style of GD’s pre-1.9 era lends itself the best with concepts that can be executed in somewhat silly, but sincere ways that define and breathe life into the space the level takes place in. I think this level is exemplary in that regard- it’s a fun little 1.7 styled prison break, complete with jailcells and wardens. I think aside from a clear sense of progression this is fantastic as far as art levels go- the best quality being that it isn’t tainted by irony or bathos at all, compared to the way that themed story levels are nowadays; it feels like there is a good amount of care that went into executing this concept in a sincere, authentic manner. This is nigh imaginary in 2.2 since creators are a lot more irony-poisoned and insincere, so it feels very refreshing that there are still gems like these in the old era that get it right.
quid's best level. The way that Kikuo plays with stereo and where the sound is coming from in Kikuo Miku 6 is translated incredibly well in GD form, only being fumbled in a select few parts (main one being the ship part with the lanterns). Funny that I never checked this one out before working on a level with a song from the same Kikuo album, and it's especially interesting how I also picked up on the stereo aspect of his music and incorporated it into my decoration, although I didn't explore it to the same depth as quid did here, similar to how the song I used didn’t explore that concept as much as the song quid used.
