i can’t believe this level exists
jenkins has always been on my radar, with zettabyte, incipient and his contributions on neutra. boy i didn NOT expect a level like this to exist. i believe that this level is song representation at its peak. i can argue commatose or well rested can be compared to this. this level IS daft punk. it feels like a project to commemorate rather than get free creator points out of the end of an amazing career. it’s a celebration of their history, their records and their music.
i can actually judge the gameplay, which is VERY very solid. it might initially be annoying but nailing all of those clicks to Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger is an unmatched feeling. sadly everything after 73% gets a little annoying with the appearing blocks, especially the 82% cube. god is it hard to get consistent at.
the song here isn’t just a compliment: it’s everything. the level spins around it and if it’s repetitive, the song is repetitive. anything here works to make it faithful to the song, especially the cherry on top, the decoration. it’s always in synchrony with the level, and it just does such a good job in representing daft punk’s legacy. one that won’t ever be forgotten.
this level is just unreal. i am still in disbelief that its real. just the fact that it does makes me so amazed.
this level is so magical
in circles is a level that was ALL over my timeline at some point, and for good reason - it should definitely get rated, even featured in my opinion. it’s a little themed about “climbing Mt. Circles” according to Somie’s tweet, and i can definitely see that in the first part. it’s like if you mashed the commatose and the sunset sandstorm mini cubes. it works well and looks pretty good, especially on that switch from white to orange. the following crystal cave looks good, although a tiny bit disconnected from the rest of the level.
right after that the level forgets about the ascension and it goes more for a vibe of “you reached the summit but it’s not over yet”. the wave and honestly everything else after that looks fun, looks good and has some pretty cool visuals albeit a little bit too shiny, especially the duals, but i can see why it’s like that. the general block design is done well enough and the saxophone hitting the high note paired with the wave dash orb is super satisfying. i do wish that the ending wasn’t just falling down a few platforms and then disintegrating. said effect looks pretty but i’d say there could’ve been something better to put there instead of that.
i can’t speak for the gameplay since i haven’t played it at all, but i’ll be sure to update this when i do a few practice runs. in hindsight a few transitions look rough but i’d say it’s nice to look at.
overall, in circles is a level that left me satisfied and frankly deserves all of the twitter hype it’s been getting. rate this!!
edit: i’ve now beaten this level, and god is the gameplay terrible
boogie has always been an interesting level for me, nowadays it’s pretty rare to see these kind of xxl levels, especially on the easier side, and i’ve been aware of its existence for a while, probably since it came out. reviewing this level before beating it (i always consider beating this but never get to it) is probably affecting it since with how i see it it’s very fun, almost every victor calls it super fun and enjoyable, and while i have done a few practice runs of it, i honestly forgot about the gameplay.
the decoration looks pretty good, no part is unpleasant to look at and it does a great job at keeping me invested for the entire 6 minutes of its duration. it’s common for other popular long levels, especially travels, to feel more like a journey with a feeling of progression. boogie does something i REALLY like, by changing between styles several times, and it works every time it does. from glow to art, especially the SICK break part in the middle that gives me chills without even playing it. boogie doesn’t feel like a long journey with a destination to get to. it truly feels like an endurance test, being very fast paced for its entire duration and making it more a push to make it through the massive length. i like how on a first playthrough it feels relatively infinite, it feels like it never ends. and then the level just ends there. i honestly like that ending, it doesn’t hint at any point that you’re close to finishing and it just looks like it keeps going, until it hits you with “there, you’re done.” it must feel so rewarding to actually complete this
i will say though, not every part is interesting. even if it constantly jumps between styles, a lot of the parts feel very similar, and a little generic. the deco is pretty basic most of the time, although when it changes it’s very satisfactory. the gameplay is also a pleasure to watch, but it’s kind of repetitive all the way through, as someone that hasn’t played it. i love how it works with the song so much, but since the song is repetitive, the gameplay is bound to be so as well.
overall, i’m a fan of boogie, and i might get around to beat it eventually... just give me like 10 more years
im sorry i cant defend you anymore 💔 wish it was an auto level
how to effectively kill a level's enjoyability: straight fly spam. at least the original had some variation. last floating ball is kind of iconic tho
these dumbass silly levels are my type of levels
