good attempt at modernizing this classic. Doesn’t react the original in quality for sure, but nice regardless
This is a "level" mix "layout" I made when I was sick and had nothing else to do. It is pretty unserious and was purely made for fun. It wasn't even meant to be a level mix at first, I just wanted to make an overdefo-styled gp but I ended up not remaking his gp that well when I got to the wave and I thought that wave looked awfully similar to a flash level so I was like what if I made a level mix instead? And what resulted was a very unpolished and inconsistent level mix with some of the levels I liked at the time that was made without little care in anything and that was made in 10 days (which is unheard of from me, especially for a 3min and a half layout).
I have several problems with this level or layout which I'm gonna talk about here. First is the level choices I've made. In all honesty, I picked whatever level I remembered and liked and tried to remake it. Most of these levels are particularly "deserving" of being in a collection of levels from the past but whatever as I said before, the levels I've picked where mostly levels that I liked. The problem I have though (which is more of a nitpick) is the lack of levels from different eras. There are 3 2.0 levels and 1 1.9 level in this level mix and the rest are all from 2.1 and mostly around the mid-2.1 era. It's not really a problem but in retrospect, I just gave too much importance to 2.1 levels. Then, the obvious issue here is the inconsistency. I said in the reviews of The Ultimate Demon and The Ultimate Return that consistency in a level mix detracts a lot from the identity of the levels. However, since I was not really experienced in the editor (and still not am today), they are levels that I remade quite well I would say like NEUTRA, Windy Landscape or Volare and other that were completely butchered by my lack of care and effort such as Nhelv, Feral or Removed Submission. The inconsistency in quality is really a problem here and I wish I gave myself more time to remake each level with an equal amount of care. I remembered spending a good morning into remaking Adventure and then rushing the remake of Nhelv in my stairs in like 1h to then copy-pasting assets from Congregation for the final part. You can easily tell that this layout was not the most serious thing I've made.
However, I still think that I did a good job at making this level. Yes, it is very inconsistent but honestly, I still think that most parts have an identity that is more or less preserved from their original counterparts and that make the level varied throughout its entire runtime. I still think that remaking the levels that way was mostly the way to go for level mix and that I did an ok job at doing it. And most importantly, making this was a fun time, it was never supposed to be something extraordinary, it's just a silly thing I made when I had nothing else to do and it happens to have a cool concept that, while not executed that well, was still interesting to explore and that I had fun working around with.
However, if given the chance, I would love to remake this concept into a more serious level (which is what I'm planning to do anyway so yeah)
A huge improvement from the previous level mix he did. (Read my previous review of The Ultimate Demon for context)
Yet again, this level is a level mix of mostly some of the hardest demons of its time and this time around, the execution is way better. One of my main complaints in The Ultimate Demon was the simplified aspects of the remakes. They were way too consistent in style which made the original levels remade there lose their identity. The gameplay was toned back and the decoration used too much glow (they are way too similar from each other) which loses the purpose of a level mix. This one however made justice to the original levels with the gameplay and deco style being very similar to their original counterparts. It still look a bit too consistent throughout the entire level (which is bad thing in a level mix) but it is not as bad as in The Ultimate Demon. There is still an issue I have with the difficulty but it is more tolerable here since the gameplay is overall harder than in The Ultimate Demon and thus closer to the difficulty of these original levels. It is also longer, which allows the level to have some progression and to let it develop into the cool climax at the end which goes back to all the 9 levels being referenced here. Yes 9 levels is still a bit too small but for a level like this one, each levels were represented equally and all felt distinct from each other and preserved their identity in both gameplay and visuals. The last thing I didn't like in The Ultimate Demon was the song choice which I felt was quite unfitting for a look back on the hardest levels in the game, but here, the song is as menacing as these levels and works really well in this context.
Yeah no this is how you make a good level mix. It makes the original levels justice while still standing out as a real level. I would not give it more than a 7 though because I still think it doesn't really go deep enough in the concept for me to justify a higher score and also because of the consistency issues
builds a good foundation for what he will make in the future however i don't think his gameplay really fits for this level. The visuals are great, not the best from him but still matches with the intensity of the song. The gameplay doesn't though, it's typical ElectricNJ gp, which is not bad by any means, in fact, I like them in any other levels I played from him but it doesn't really represent the song that well, especially in the 2nd half where I expected some gp like in Nhelv and instead we get gp that is even less complex than in the 1st drop. It doesn't even play that well imo, it has some very weird chokepoints and gp design such as that one ball click at around 75 or the UFO before it. I like the gp in the non-drop sections though, especially the build-up before the 2nd drop.
But yeah, this level is good overall, could have been way better if the gp was a bit more interesting. And this level being good makes me really excited for reGENERATION. From what I've seen, the gp is way better there and the visuals are gonna be even more crazy. Can't wait for that one
good levle
