This should've won, but that's less because it's above and beyond great and more because everything else sucks. Interesting and well executed theme but aside from that I really don't get the hype. The song is on the worse end of Frums' music and especially works poorly for this level and makes it feel like it got cut short, like there's more to see beyond the final exit door but the level abruptly stops because of book jumpscare.
I keep the gameplay/visuals ratings off because just on principle I don't think they should be separate, but if there was ever a creator who'd make me change that it'd be Quasar. He has some of the absolute greatest visuals of any creator. There's nothing like this guy's style, and it's absolutely amazing, but he makes such god-awful gameplay it almost makes me want to be less skilled at the game so I couldn't judge it. This, Scheltopusik, Rainbow Carol, hell even Kuiper for that matter. How does he keep doing this.
Crack Treated Seriously
I love over-the-top bullshit. There are other levels like DIAMOND BLADE and Sakupen End which do it well in their own way, but when it comes to story levels, cw2003 GB is the only guy who's been able to pull this off naturally. His levels honestly feel like something you'd find in Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, complete with Araki's unique use of colors, and out of his levels, I think this was his best.
Second half isn't as good but the first half more than makes up for it
This is a level about freedom and repression. I'm actually glad this has near-empty segments, devoid of structures and even having auto gameplay, because it creates a feeling of freely flying up and down through an empty sky, while other times you're repressed by being stuck on the ground or trapped by a structure, the latter being made even better by the fact they're often restrictive of player movement. I also like how the ending is mostly auto but has a little set of a few extra clicks, essentially saying that even if you "win" you can't give up fighting. Also that mini block cloud-maze thing is just sick
Nothing does an uneasy atmosphere like this. Song doesn't need any explanation. Copypaste really just makes you get lost, not to mention that some of it is strangely broken. Tight unmoving corridors are pretty much the perfect gameplay for this. Black voids make it hard to tell where one of the faces watching you ends and another begins. Your only guiding lights in the predrop are sets of teeth. Little unexplained details like the "SSS" text and the red monster. This is the best horror level in the game
Utterly deranged level. I love it
