The Seven Seas is the first level of the first spinoff game Geometry Dash Meltdown; and it served as a teaser of what to come in Update 2.0
I remember finding this level absolutely epic as a kid when Meltdown first dropped. When you collect the key at 7% and all the platforms and dragons appear out of nowhere, I remember my jaw dropped. It seemed like there were so many more possibilities for the game.
The first 30% of this level is a bit too grey for my liking - with sporadic flashes of purple that get more frequent as you get closer to the drop. This seems like an odd choice as the extra color channels were a big new feature of Update 2.0
The 30% ship could have used some moving objects but I understand Rob probably didn’t want to overwhelm the player as this is the first level.
The 45% cube is absolutely epic and syncs perfectly with the song. The 60% ship is a bit too short to be memorable, but I like the use of dragons
The 68% cube features some cool deco at the triple spike, the 80% ship is more of the same, and the 90% cube is more of the same.
Altogether, I think this level does a good job of introducing the new 2.0 features while being approachable for new players. Unfortunately that fact that it was targeted at new players makes it unmemorable for me as I had already beaten Clubstep and ToE 2 by the time this came out. That being said, I love the F-777 song and think this level serves it well
A big thank you goes to Fenniko for requesting this level on my review request thread 😊
Rewind is a mostly generic 3 star level. I had beaten this before but totally forgot the level so I think that’s a testament to the level’s lack of memorability.
However, that being said this level is still good for what it is - in general most 2-3 star levels aren’t meant to be memorable.
I love the city landscape in the background and the final wave with all the star obstacles is fantastic.
The second coin at 56% is a bit mean as unless you know you have to spam there you won’t get it.
Overall, this is an inoffensive 3 star level. Chances are only stargrinders will play this level, and they will probably be fine with this level before moving onto the next 3 star level. For that reason, I think Fenniko succeeded at creating a good 3 star level - at this difficulty it’s usually a problem if your level is memorable.
First of all, a big thank you goes to kaleyyy for requesting this level on my review request thread 😊
ImaGiNatiOn is like if Dont Rate this Level by KrmaL was intended to be a good level. The gameplay features all the goofy tropes that are infamous in old 2.0 levels including blind transitions, moving obstacle spam, slower than 0.5x speed ship parts (due to objects moving in reverse), etc.
That being said, the gameplay flows a lot better than Dont Rate this Level and syncs perfectly with the song (unfortunately I was unable to download the song on mobile, but editing the song in its clear the sync is excellent).
The standout part imo is the factory section at 36%. I wonder if there is any connection between this factory and the lore of Factory by Saturos182, one of the most infamous 2.0 levels.
The rainbow deco is used to great effect in the first half of this level and both of the slow sections are very nostalgic of common 2.0 tropes.
Overall, you can tell this level was made by a creator with a clear love for the 2.0 Renaissance era of GD. It excels at what it set out to do, and for that it gets higher than average marks overall. I’m not personally a fan of 2.0 gameplay so that’s why my gameplay score is lower - however this gameplay is clearly part of the artistic purpose of this level.
If it were a bit longer and featured more parts I’d increase the score more. I still think this level is rateworthy even if my score suggests otherwise
The Tower is a very inoffensive introduction to platformer gameplay in GD
I love the RobTop gimmick of having one coin for collecting all visible gold coins, one coin for collecting 3 hidden blue coins, and one coin for speedrunning the level. Some would say this reduces the creativity in platformer coins, but I disagree: the 3 hidden blue coins act like the typical secret coins while the gold coins and Speedrun challenges allow for replayability.
I don’t really have much more to say about this level - it’s a pretty standard platformer comparable to the Mario games or any other platformer game. It introduces the main villain of The Tower - the Glados-esque figure at the end of the level.
Overall, this was a well made platformer level, but nothing outstanding.
Fingerdash always felt like the least effort RobTop level, especially compared to the 10 levels that came before it. Some parts like the robot after the ship part just feel shockingly empty and out of place.
That being said, it’s still a solid level and much better than most of the rated levels from the early 2.1 period.
The first cube truly feels epic and inspired some iconic 2.1 levels like Incipient. The introduction to the Dash orb is revolutionary - it really adds variety to orb spam parts when you have to hold for certain orbs.
At the end of the predrop you get an epic auto section that leads to the first spider part in GD history. This spider part does a good job of introducing what spider is all about - make sure you turn “Always Limit Controls” on so you can double tap for the first coin on mobile.
After the spider you have a cool ship part with lots of fire effects. The coin here requires some tight ship control. After the ship you have the robot which feels very empty compared to any other RobTop part imo.
After the robot you have the wave part which might have the trickiest coin since the Theory of Everything mini ship coin. This coin requires you to collect all 10 mini coins in the wave - if you miss a single one you’re locked out of the coin. After the wave you have a tight spider part and then a cube part to finish off the level.
Overall, this level just feels a bit empty. I think I agree with the general community this is weaker than the levels that came in 1.9 and 2.0 but it’s still a solid level and can be fun to replay. I also appreciate it because it’s a breath of fresh air after the brutal nature of Deadlocked.
Electroman Adventures has one of the best songs in the main game, yet another banger from the GOAT Waterflame.
As for the gameplay, it’s inoffensive but very forgettable imo. The most unique part is the first part with the breakable blocks and one of the most well hidden coins in the main game. Everything else kind of blends together.
This level did inspire Gigichad adventures which is peak GD
Theory of Everything has one of the best songs of any RobTop level imo, with the recognizable MYSTERY PIANO!!! The entire song is beautifully composed and the final part of the song is always a joy to listen to.
As for the gameplay, it’s a bit forgettable imo. The standout parts are definitely the UFO, but that’s to be expected as it’s the introduction to the UFO
The second coin in the mini ship is still one of the scariest coins of any RobTop level.
Overall, a good level. Not as memorable as it could have been, but it’s fine for what it is imo.
Clutterfunk was the level that I watched more than any other level as a kid - the song just gets so catchy during the final cube that I was addicted to it
Unfortunately, playing this level is a lot less fun than watching it imo. This level introduces the mini portal - an absolute game changer with the potential for good or bad.
It takes a lot of practice to get used to the mini cube parts as you have to learn a whole new trajectory for cube jumps. Additionally, the ship parts are extremely tight, much harder than anything else up to this point. All three coins are challenging imo, making this one of the scariest levels to go for in a 100% Speedrun.
The highlight of this level is the final cube imo, mostly because of the song. This cube is just so unique compared to any other RobTop cube part - it manages to be repetitive while also feeling interesting.
Unfortunately, the final cube does not make up for the annoying ship parts imo, and overall I don’t enjoy this level nearly as much as I did as a kid. I’d still consider this a Top 5 hardest RobTop level, much harder than Hexagon Force imo
This level is noteworthy for inspiring Future Funk, one of my personal favorite levels of all time
A good introduction to GD I suppose. The two triple spike jumps are pretty mean for this early in the game, but I absolutely love the gradual jump in complexity from the pre-ship to the post-ship cube sections
The third coin is really creative and kind of set the bar high for user coins
