It's absolutely a great feeling getting to see that your work has inspired others, so I really can't rate this lower, but with that said:
Was Hiasobi really that good? Like it was decently fun to verify and all but I really don't see it as one of my best. I'm glad people like it but idk man I would've preferred something I'm genuinely proud of like Roundabout to be the one that gets a bit of praise.
Anyway, surrounding context over, this is the same as my own level but made by a different person
See the thing about a level being raw is that it also necessarily means it's unpolished. You're gonna get parts with crazy good visual sync, creative designs, and unique gameplay, but every once in a while you're also gonna get a part that's ugly, awkward, or so easily improved that it's painful.
The first half and the ending are pretty good. "Slow, grayscale, underground" are adjectives associated with levels that either go heavy on the emotions (e.g. Lonely Travel), or have an overwhelming, intimidating atmosphere (e.g. Cimmerian Shade's slow parts). Instead of those however, this has a feeling that I can't really describe as anything other than "jazz". Like, this is the visual equivalent of the song's genre. It's not the anxiety of a Minecraft cave, rather it's more like an underground lounge where you'd hang out with friends. The gameplay restrictions help this to a degree as well, no spikes=less threatening.
Then there's the wave and robot, and listen, I get it. This is supposed to be intentionally infuriating to play, so in theory this sort of sarcastic anti-horror would fit well with that, but it ends up horribly clashing with the established atmosphere. It feels like it's from another level, and frankly it feels like there should've been another (not pigstep (wtf happened to that)). Two intentionally infuriating levels, one sarcastically relaxing, one sarcastically sarcastic. At least the robot's sync is good
Credit where credit's due, at least this was a separate level instead of an update
Coming back to revise my review of this because I've gradually warmed up to the song (granted it's in the same way that I liked the Silly Songs With Larry segments in Veggietales. Not sure if that was the intention, but knowing Pamka's taste in music he probably didn't see it that way). Thanks for the vocal stims
Granted this is still very much "a few good parts in a pile of trash" and the song STILL doesn't do it many favors since it's not exactly the sort of song that works well with GD in general.
If you don't like this level then that's on you for not knowing how to have fun
No like deadass this is some of the most fun I've had with this game in ages
His soul was sucked into the void
This is the reverse of how I feel about Overtime. For some reason, despite having over 4 million views and being neither a meme nor 2.2 clickbait, this is somehow never talked about, which is even weirder considering it's super well polished.
Obviously not all of this is the best and there are a number of rather "meh" parts, plus I have some issues with the song (The excessive autotune in Juice WRLD's verses really rubs me the wrong way), but despite all of that I still really like this.
The sync and structuring are both on point. The rapid gamemode changes fit great with the fast pace of the song, but the feel of the gameplay remains consistent enough that it never feels totally disconnected. Maybe that's just a consequence of being solo, but there are also a lot of recurring elements (black orb staircases etc). The red part really gives off this sense of "laser focus", being largely a series of simple spam challenges to go with the very basic instrumentals and unbroken rhythm in the lyrics.
Also, the wheels. I love the wheels.
Of the solo layouts that got mega popular for "legit reasons" (i.e. no memes and no 2.2 fanmades), this one's reputation has struck me as weird pretty much ever since the initial hype wore off.
Why is this so highly praised? The good parts are brief and thinly spread out in a level that's 3 and a half minutes long, deadass never goes more than 5% before going back to being forgettable. It's more or less proto-flow (probably something that helped inspire the existence of flow GP tbh), and it's pretty buggy at that. Like actually how do you screw up the dash orb angle like that. That part is the worst offender and I hate it
Two invisiBill Nyes
SEVERE memory level syndrome (has that been the virus this whole time?) but the distracting visuals themselves are so good they provide a cure (mostly, enough parts still fly through me that I can't rate this higher than a 6), not to mention this has an instantly recognizeable design style. Also that grey transition segment really stands out to me for some reason
