I had to watch this a few times to actually determine what I thought about it, but what I get from this level is that, from the depictions of school, the knife, the noose and the medication, the level represents the euphoria of relieving onself through harm, and drugs as a consequence of experiences at school. Another interpretation I considered is that the protagonist has in fact commited suicide, and the depictions of heaven are the afterlife, the bliss gained from an absence of the misery of life. It can certainly be missed if you don't pay attention, this covert messaging is reflective of how in the modern day, signs of mental health issues such as suicidal and addictive tendancies regularly go unnoticed due to the masking which an individual persues, the song also is reflective of this notion, the completely joyful upbeat song is ironic, telling the viewer "everything is fine" when perseptive viewers know this is not the case. The cyclical structure of the level hints at the idea that this is an innevitable cycle that seemingly goes unbroken as once you come back down from that high you are back in the same place as the you started, possibly symbolising some sort of addiction. Very interesting expression, and I hope you are doing okay if this interpretation is in any way relevent to you yourself or anyone reading, as the ideas the level portray are in no way encouraging such actions, as you are always back where you began after the brief hit.
Terrifying in a beautiful way, that feeling of megalophobia you get from watching this level is seemingly unmatched. The level itself is a surreal acid trip, the slow pacing giving the level an uncanny and unsettling appeal. The art in this level is masterfully crafted, to a degree where the traditional GD assets contrast with the designs in a way which amplifies that unsettling feel. The heads of the structures feel like that of a creature looking down on the player as if they are in some way sentient, the level feels sinultaniously lonely, but as if there is another life form present, that life form being the depicted structures. I cannot deny that this level is certainly a masterpiece.
WOOGI levels are consistently radiant with joy, and colorful overnight is a prime example of this, certain impactful clicks are almost celebratory in nature, from the duals movements, I am reminded of that of a party poppers contents, explosive, and a symbol of pure happiness. The song is nothing short of amazing and compliments the euphoria which dissipates from colorful overnight. I get chills watching this level, what a vibe it is. In regards the visuals, they're beautiful, the transluscent block use is a great detail and makes the level seem like it is alive, it adds a shine to the level which otherwise wouldn't be present. The use of the monochromatic build up in order to make the colours of the next part pop make the level feel so unique and create an awesome experience. Despite it's age colorful overnight still holds up as one of the best levels in existence. I just wish it was longer and had more time to it's disposal to have the emotional effects of the level last longer.
An awesome joke level, satirising the idea of generic levels and gameplay. no jokes is a huge fuck you to creator point standards and embraces it's own personality in the latter half of the level. Some if the best song representation in any level, and using a generic art style contrasted with a unique expressionistic art style in order represent the same sort of dynamic in the song is an awesome gimmick that gives no jokes am awesome personality. The sentiment it is perpetuating being one I heavily agree with.
Stylistically unique and thematically consistent. The fever dream esque style perfectly reflects the title, LD50 (the amount of a substance that would kill 50% of the population should it be consumed) the level feels like you are on an acid trip of sorts, the messy decoration reflective of one's tarnished cognitive abilities as a consequence of poison, symbolic of a sort of mind fog that is common whilst under the influence. Truly ethereal level to experience.
Titanomachina is one of the most stylistic and avante garde layouts I have seen, it is impossible to predict the gameplay choices in this level, their unpredictable nature contrasting the repetitive song. The level is baron, devoid of decoration, but not of personality, the use of gameplay gimmicks to convey "hell theme" in a truly unconventional manner is awesome, rather than being an impossibke level purely based upon difficult short window timings a large amount of Titanomachina's difficulty comes from deciphering the gameplay itself. A truky interesting experience that has an unnerving feel, like the fear of the dark, ambiguity can be uncomfortable and discombobulating.
Stylistically innovative, with awesome art. Death Moon is home to some of the most iconic parts in the whole game, the impactful, synced predrop and the iconic wave. Death Moon is a journey which is a marvel of 1.9 editor usage, simultaniously representing the positive song and persuing the hell theme. Death Moon is unbelievably memorable even in the modern day showing just how artistic and unique it is as an experience. The ending to Death Moon is a triumphant one, with almost no hazardous objects, Death Moon congratulates the player for passing through the gauntlet of difficulty which acts as the perfect finale to an already amazing experience.
This is one of if not the coolest layouts that exist, the pinnacle of impossible levels and song representation. The level being themed around being badly made and defying convention, mocking impossible levels is weirdly defied, because in their attempt to do that they made something incredibly stylistic and awesome. The basic decoration and monochromatic colour choices reflect the nostalgic technological sounds of the song. The question marks reflecting the ambiguous unpredictable nature of the music makes for an awesome emotionally resonant level. One of my favourites, I hope to see the layout version to be the one verified and recognised, as the decoration strips the level of it's simplistic identity and evidently only exists in order to get the level rated.
Crossroads, ironically, lacks direction despite its repetitive nature, the level is contemporary and abstract making for an atmospheric experience. The simplistic visuals in certain parts contrasted with some incredibly overtly viceral parts give the level a truly unique feeling. Every new part feels like a consequence of the lack of direction the level aims to symbolise, all being unique in their own ways. Motifs such as the door symbolise the idea of direction perfectly. The fact that the gameplay is invisible creates a truly immersive experience, and I get an odd sense of lonliness and melancholy from this level, as a conseuquence of the levels theming, the songs repetitive nature and the levels messaging. Truly a beautiful level which symbolises what I appreciate about the game as an artistic medium.
Removed Submission prides itself in it's song representation, the gameplay reflecting the lyrics (spam) is a nice touch that really helps build the levels identity. The level being themed around newgrounds itself is very unique and frankly awesome in my view. The ironically comedic nature of both the song and level makes the level a lot of fun to experience.
